2016 Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship

 As a part of our Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship Contest, we awarded $20,000 in scholarships to four high school student athletes who demonstrated outstanding leadership in academics, sports and community involvement. On April 12, each scholarship recipient was honored at the Wisconsin Sports Awards, an exclusive VIP event celebrating the best of Wisconsin athletics in high school, collegiate and professional arenas.

Kaj - $7,500 Winner

$7,500 Male Winner

Kaj Days • Racine, WI • Washington Park High School

Being selected as a Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship Contest finalist is an honor! This recognition is proof that being humble, hungry, and the hardest worker on the court, in the classroom, and the community pays off. I have been blessed this year with several on court and classroom honors and this selection by Cousins Subs is the frosting on the cake."

Kaj Days is what you call a triple threat—a 3.65 GPA student, successful three-sport athlete and community advocate. He is a four-year starter for Park’s varsity basketball team and holds various achievements in volleyball and track & field including SEC All-Conference honors, Racine County honors and state level recognition. He also broke the school and Park fieldhouse record in high jump with a height of 6’ 8—a record previously set in 2000.

Kaj is dedicated to making his school and community a better place. He is involved with school activities such as student government, LINK Crew and DECA. In addition, he values his work with Panther Pals in which he mentors students with cognitive disabilities to assist them with learning important life skills.

Kaj will attend the University of Illinois at Springfield where he will pursue a business degree with an emphasis on global studies and/or international business.


Andrea - $7,500 Winner

Andi Wenck • East Troy, WI • Waterford Union High School

This award is such an honor; I feel very blessed to have received the Wisconsin Sports Awards scholarship. My work ethic has always enabled me to pursue higher goals and achieve success both on and off the field."

Andi Wenck is the kind of person who leaves everything on the field and in the classroom. While maintaining an outstanding 4.06 GPA, she is a four-year varsity soccer player receiving multiple recognitions as Conference Player of the Year, 1st team All-Conference and County teams and two All-State awards. She also excels on the basketball court and was named her team’s 2015 captain.

Andi is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Cloverview 4-H, where she serves as the Jr. Leader representative on the Racine County Fair Board. As a Jr. Leader, she helps young 4-Hers learn how to take photography, show rabbits or cattle and volunteers at the Jr. Leaders Association Call Booth. Andi has also organized blood drives and relay/ bark for life outings and hosted socials for nursing home residents.

Andi will go on to play Big 12 soccer as the goal keeper for Kansas State’s first-ever women’s soccer team. She will also follow her culinary dreams by pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in food science.


Ben - $2,500 Winner

$2,500 Male Winner

Ben Wachter • Franklin, WI • Franklin High School

“The scholarship shows that hard work and dedication pays off. All the hours in practices, meetings and community service allowed me to receive this award."

Ben Wachter brings an outstanding level of devotion to all that he contributes to—academics, athletics and community involvement. As a committed 3.94 GPA student, he values extracurricular activities and is a member of National Honor Society. As an athlete, he has participated in football and basketball for all four years of high school and was chosen to be captain for each of these sports three out of four years. In 2015, he was recognized as his football team’s Most Valuable Player and 1st Team All-Conference Quarterback. In addition, he received the Scholar-Athlete Award for 2014 basketball and 2015 football and lacrosse.

In addition to his participation in several sports, Ben dedicates much of his time to volunteering with Best Buddies, in which he has worked as an officer, a Best Buddy to a student with disabilities and a mentor to a class of students with disabilities. He also spends his time working with local food kitchens and making blankets for the homeless.

Ben will attend St. Cloud State University where he will play football and study to be an accountant.



Emily - $2,500 Winner

$2,500 Female Winner

Emily Beltran • Berlin, WI • Berlin High School

"The driving factor behind my success in sports and academics is the environment in which I grew up. I was always taught to never give up on myself and to stay determined until I reached my goals. My parents and coaches have greatly influenced my success."

Emily Beltran is a gifted 4.8 GPA student, dedicated athlete and outstanding school citizen, who gives 110 percent on and off the court/field. She has achieved many athletic accolades in varsity volleyball, cross country and track and field—including recognition for multiple team conference championships and state/regional qualifiers.

Outside of sports, Emily is a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Decathlon and a leader of the LINK Crew Committee in which she helps freshman adjust to high school. She also spends her time mentoring elementary school students or volunteering on the KIND Committee, in which she practices spreading kindness throughout Berlin High School and the community by leading food drives, volunteering, organizing the “Be The Match” bone marrow registry and teaching students to pay it forward. Emily also organizes and runs a youth running program at the local Boys and Girls Club.

With a passion for helping others, Emily plans on attending medical school after obtaining her undergraduate degree. Following medical school, she aims to work in the sports medicine field.
